The climate is characterized by continental influence from the surrounding mountains with warm days and cool nights. The large temperature differences between day and night, combined with soil of limestone, marl, and sandstone with varying clay content, provide optimal conditions for grape growing.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe area is located in the prestigious region of Piedmont in northwestern Italy, which is surrounded by the Alps. The region is famous for its enormous focus on terroir and its dramatic landscape with steep hills that are often shrouded in thick morning fog in the autumn.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFontanafredda has origins with deep royal roots. The estate was founded in 1858 by Italy's first king, Vittorio Emanuele II, as a gift to his mistress and later wife, Rosa Vercellana. Their son, Count Emanuele Alberto, developed the winery and released the estate's first Barolo label in 1878. The characteristic buildings on the estate still bear the brown and ochre-yellow colors of the House of Savoy royal family.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eToday, Fontanafredda is owned by Oscar Farinetti and Luca Baffigo, who have led the estate into a new era with a strong focus on sustainability. The estate is entirely unique, as all of Fontanafredda constitutes its own MGA and monopole-cru.
