The 1966 Recioto della Valpolicella Amarone Classico is a historic red wine produced by Bolla. The estate was founded in 1883 when Abele Bolla began bottling local wine in Soave, east of Verona. This marked the beginning of a house that played a pivotal role in introducing Northern Italian wines to an international audience, becoming highly prominent in the United States during the 1960s and 1970s. Operating with a traditional merchant house approach, Bolla gathers wines from local vineyards under its recognized name, with deep roots in both the Soave and Valpolicella appellations. Today, the estate is part of Gruppo Italiano Vini, carrying forward its legacy as an early ambassador for Italian wine.
The wine originates from Veneto in northeastern Italy, a highly productive region stretching from the Alps to the Adriatic Sea, renowned for its diverse output ranging from sparkling wines to concentrated reds. Specifically, it comes from the Valpolicella area north of Verona. Recioto della Valpolicella is traditionally a sweet red wine style and is widely regarded as the ancient ancestor of both Amarone and standard Valpolicella, with a winemaking tradition that traces its roots back to the Rhaetian wines of the Roman era.
The production relies primarily on the local Corvina and Corvinone grape varieties, supplemented by Rondinella and small amounts of other regional grapes such as Molinara and Oseleta. The winemaking process utilizes the traditional appassimento method, where the harvested grapes are dried for 100 to 160 days on bamboo racks or in a dedicated drying room known as a fruttaio. This extensive drying period naturally concentrates the sugars in the grapes before fermentation, which is traditionally stopped while significant residual sugar remains. According to the original label details, this 1966 Denominazione di Origine Controllata release was produced and bottled in the "Cantina del Nonno" cellar, located in Pedemonte della Valpolicella.

Storage
Store the bottle horizontally at 12–14°C and avoid direct sunlight, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations.
Opening
Allow the bottle to stand upright for 24–48 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Use a professional corkscrew and open carefully.
Enjoyment
Serve at 17–18°C and be patient – there is a great difference in how and how quickly wines open up when they are aerated.
