Bairrada Caves Primavera 1980 low level
The Bairrada Caves Primavera 1980 is a Portuguese red wine produced by Caves Primavera, Lda. This wine originates from Bairrada, a renowned wine region classified as a Região Demarcada, which is situated 70 kilometers south of Porto.
The 1980 vintage is recognized as a top year for the Bairrada area. Over the years, Primavera Bairrada has been presented at various national and international events, earning several medals, including recognition at The International Wine & Spirit Competition in London in 1986.
Bottled at 12% alcohol by volume in a 750 ml format, this red wine has a residual sugar content of 1.5 grams. It stands as a classic representation of the demarcated Bairrada region's production from that specific harvest.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Bairrada
Bairrada is a recognized wine region located in central Portugal, more specifically in the province of Beira Litoral. The area stretches from the Atlantic coast in the west to the mountainous Dão areas in the east. The region received its official status as a demarcated wine area (Região Demarcada) in 1979, but has a wine history that stretches back many centuries.
The geography gives Bairrada a distinct maritime climate with great influence from the Atlantic Ocean. This results in mild temperatures, cooling sea breezes and relatively large amounts of precipitation, which creates favorable conditions for viticulture. The soil consists predominantly of clay and limestone, and the name Bairrada itself originates from the Portuguese word "barro", which means clay.
The wine tradition in Bairrada is strongly linked to the local blue grape variety, Baga, which historically has dominated the region's production of red wines. In addition to the classic red wines, the region also has a long tradition of producing sparkling wines as well as white wines. Where production was previously subject to strict requirements regarding the use of the Baga grape, legislation has since the beginning of the 2000s opened up to a wider range of both national and international grape varieties.
