Barolo Marchesi di Barolo 1977
This is a 1977 Barolo from Cantine dei Marchesi di Barolo, presented in a large 3-liter format with an alcohol content of 13%. The 1977 vintage in this area was characterized as a difficult and wet year. The wine originates from Piedmont in northwestern Italy, a region whose name literally translates to "at the foot of the mountain." Surrounded by the Alps, Piedmont is globally recognized as one of the most prestigious wine regions, characterized by dramatic, steep hills, particularly in the Langhe subregion. These hills are often enveloped in thick autumn morning fog, which protects the grapes and ensures a long, perfect ripening period.
Located southwest of Alba, the Barolo appellation is one of Piedmont's most esteemed wine areas and is celebrated for producing some of Italy's great classic red wines. The area is inextricably linked to Nebbiolo, an Italian top grape known for yielding elegant wines with great structure. Nebbiolo is the sole grape used in this Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) wine, which also carries the V.Q.P.R.D. quality designation.
Marchesi di Barolo is widely considered the historical cradle of modern Barolo. The estate's origins are tied to the Falletti family, who in the early 19th century created the wine style known today as Barolo. Marquise Giulia Falletti Colbert and her husband Carlo Tancredi Falletti were instrumental in transforming Nebbiolo from a sweet wine into a dry red wine, and the appellation itself is named after these former owners. After the Falletti dynasty ended without heirs in 1864, the estates passed to a charity before the Abbona family purchased the historic cellar in 1929. Today, the winery is run by the fifth and sixth generations of the Abbona family.
The estate, officially established in 1861, manages 110 hectares of land, including 45 hectares of their own vineyards. Their portfolio features some of the most prestigious parcels in the area, such as 4.5 hectares in Cannubi, 6.5 hectares in Sarmassa, and Coste di Rose. The wine was vinified and bottled at the source by the estate. In a rare historical detail, five of Marchesa Giulia's original oak barrels from the 19th century remain in use in the cellar today, serving as a living link between the birth of Barolo and its modern form.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Piedmont
Piedmont (which literally means "at the foot of the mountain") is located in northwestern Italy, surrounded by the Alps. It is considered one of the world's absolute most prestigious wine regions. The area is known for small, passionate, family-run wineries and a huge focus on terroir (how the soil and microclimate affect the wine).
Classic characteristics of Piedmont:
The royal wines: This is where the world-famous, complex and expensive red wines Barolo and Barbaresco come from (both made from 100% Nebbiolo).
Everyday heroes: In addition to Nebbiolo, the region is famous for the grapes Barbera (juicy, acidic and incredibly popular) and Dolcetto (dark, soft and fruity).
The white and sweet: Piedmont also makes the crisp white wine Gavi and the famous, lightly sparkling dessert bubbles Moscato d'Asti.
The landscape: Dramatic, steep hills – especially in the Langhe sub-area. The hills are often shrouded in thick morning mist in autumn, which protects the grapes and allows for a long, perfect ripening.
Gastronomy: An absolute mecca for food lovers. The area is world famous for the exclusive white truffles from Alba, hazelnuts and rich, simmered dishes that scream with a glass of local red wine.
