Cremosina Barolo Riserva Speciale 1965 Bersano
The 1965 Cremosina Barolo Riserva Speciale is a classic Italian red wine produced by Bersano. This Denominazione di Origine Controllata wine originates from the prestigious Barolo area, located in the Langhe hills southwest of Alba in the Piemonte region.
Bersano was founded in 1907 by Giuseppe Bersano in Nizza Monferrato. The historic Cremosina vineyard, from which this wine takes its name, was acquired shortly after in 1912. From 1935, Arturo Bersano expanded the estate's reach, building an international reputation for the house. Today, the winery covers over 230 hectares across the Langhe and Monferrato areas and is managed by the Massimelli family, with Federica Massimelli taking the helm in 2021 as the estate's first female leader.
Piemonte, situated in northwestern Italy and surrounded by the Alps, translates to "at the foot of the mountain." The region is celebrated for its dramatic, steep hills, which are often enveloped in thick morning fog during the autumn. This fog protects the grapes and ensures a long, perfect ripening period. The area is characterized by a strong focus on terroir, highlighting how the soil and microclimate influence the final product. Within this region lies Barolo, one of Piemonte's most prestigious wine areas, renowned for producing some of Italy's great classic red wines.
This wine is made exclusively from Nebbiolo, an Italian top grape variety known for creating elegant wines with great structure. Nebbiolo is deeply tied to the Barolo and Barbaresco areas, as well as the broader Piemonte region, where it is the foundation for the area's most renowned red wines.
The wine was bottled directly in the production zone, sourced from the vineyards of Terre del Barolo, which is designated as a premium zone. The estate utilized traditional production methods, referred to historically as "all'antica," working with grapes from the classic zones of Piemonte to ensure the quality associated with the Bersano name.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Piedmont
Piedmont (which literally means "at the foot of the mountain") is located in northwestern Italy, surrounded by the Alps. It is considered one of the world's absolute most prestigious wine regions. The area is known for small, passionate, family-run wineries and a huge focus on terroir (how the soil and microclimate affect the wine).
Classic characteristics of Piedmont:
The royal wines: This is where the world-famous, complex and expensive red wines Barolo and Barbaresco come from (both made from 100% Nebbiolo).
Everyday heroes: In addition to Nebbiolo, the region is famous for the grapes Barbera (juicy, acidic and incredibly popular) and Dolcetto (dark, soft and fruity).
The white and sweet: Piedmont also makes the crisp white wine Gavi and the famous, lightly sparkling dessert bubbles Moscato d'Asti.
The landscape: Dramatic, steep hills – especially in the Langhe sub-area. The hills are often shrouded in thick morning mist in autumn, which protects the grapes and allows for a long, perfect ripening.
Gastronomy: An absolute mecca for food lovers. The area is world famous for the exclusive white truffles from Alba, hazelnuts and rich, simmered dishes that scream with a glass of local red wine.
