Vigna Cannubi - Muscatel Barolo Riserva 1976
The 1976 Vigna Cannubi - Muscatel Barolo Riserva is a classic Italian red wine crafted by Cantine dei Marchesi di Barolo. This estate is widely recognized as the historical cradle of modern Barolo. Its origins trace back to the early 1800s and the Falletti family, specifically Marquise Giulia Falletti Colbert and her husband Carlo Tancredi Falletti. They were responsible for transforming the local Nebbiolo grape from a sweet wine into a dry style, ultimately giving birth to the Barolo appellation as it is known today. Following the end of the Falletti dynasty in 1864, the estate passed to a charitable foundation before the Abbona family purchased the historic cellars in 1929. Today, the fifth and sixth generations of the Abbona family continue to run the estate, remarkably still utilizing five of Marquise Giulia's original oak barrels from the 19th century.
This wine originates from the prestigious Piedmont region in northwestern Italy, an area bordered by the Alps and celebrated for its dramatic, steep hills and deep focus on terroir. Specifically, it comes from the Barolo area within the Langhe hills, located southwest of Alba. The vineyards here are often enveloped in thick autumn morning fog, which protects the grapes and ensures a long, steady ripening process. The 1976 vintage in this region is described as warm and ripe, earning a score of 87 points.
The wine is made exclusively from Nebbiolo, a highly regarded Italian grape variety known for producing elegant wines with significant structure, predominantly cultivated in Barolo, Barbaresco, and the wider Piedmont region. The grapes for this specific Denominazione di Origine Controllata wine were sourced from the Cannubi-Muscatel vineyard, a small amphitheater-shaped parcel carved into the side of the renowned Cannubi hill. This specific site, officially mapped on Sheet 7, parcels 170 and 231 of the Municipality of Barolo, is historically recognized as a premier location for vine cultivation. This 1976 release was produced as a limited reserve from this exceptional terroir.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Piedmont
Piedmont (which literally means "at the foot of the mountain") is located in northwestern Italy, surrounded by the Alps. It is considered one of the world's absolute most prestigious wine regions. The area is known for small, passionate, family-run wineries and a huge focus on terroir (how the soil and microclimate affect the wine).
Classic characteristics of Piedmont:
The royal wines: This is where the world-famous, complex and expensive red wines Barolo and Barbaresco come from (both made from 100% Nebbiolo).
Everyday heroes: In addition to Nebbiolo, the region is famous for the grapes Barbera (juicy, acidic and incredibly popular) and Dolcetto (dark, soft and fruity).
The white and sweet: Piedmont also makes the crisp white wine Gavi and the famous, lightly sparkling dessert bubbles Moscato d'Asti.
The landscape: Dramatic, steep hills – especially in the Langhe sub-area. The hills are often shrouded in thick morning mist in autumn, which protects the grapes and allows for a long, perfect ripening.
Gastronomy: An absolute mecca for food lovers. The area is world famous for the exclusive white truffles from Alba, hazelnuts and rich, simmered dishes that scream with a glass of local red wine.
