Beaujolais-Villages Georges Duboeuf 1994
The 1994 Château de Varennes is a red wine produced by Georges Dubœuf under the Appellation Beaujolais Villages Contrôlée. Georges Dubœuf established his merchant house in Romanèche-Thorins in 1964 and subsequently became the most influential individual in modern Beaujolais history. Under his leadership, the region and its Gamay-based wines gained international visibility, transforming the annual release of Beaujolais Nouveau into a global event. Following his passing in 2020, the house is now managed by his son, Franck Dubœuf.
This wine originates from the Beaujolais region, an extensive wine-producing area located south of Burgundy and north of Lyon, stretching 52 kilometers down towards Mâcon. The region spans approximately 15,000 hectares and is the traditional homeland of the French Gamay grape, which is also cultivated in the Loire Valley. In Beaujolais, the vines are often grown using the traditional gobelet method without wire trellising. The northern part of the region, known as Haut Beaujolais, is characterized by granite soils, while the southern Bas Beaujolais features clay and limestone.
The Georges Dubœuf house works across the entire spectrum of the region, producing everything from generic Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages to the ten Cru appellations, which include Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, Morgon, and Brouilly. The 1994 Château de Varennes represents the Beaujolais Villages classification, bottled at 12.5% alcohol by Les Vins Georges Dubœuf.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Beaujolais
Beaujolais south of Burgundy is the homeland of the Gamay grape. The area became world-famous for the young, fruity Beaujolais Nouveau, but the real quality lies in the ten cru villages such as Morgon and Fleurie. The granite subsoil yields juicy, light red wines with fresh acidity and aromas of red berries, flowers and spice. A classic and incredibly food-friendly French red wine region.
