Il Greppo Brunello di Montalcino Biondi-Santi 1977
This is the 1977 Il Greppo Brunello di Montalcino from the historic Biondi-Santi estate. Biondi-Santi is widely recognized as the house that invented Brunello di Montalcino. At the Il Greppo estate, located south of Montalcino, Clemente Santi laid the foundation in the mid-1800s by producing a pure red wine exclusively from Sangiovese. It was his grandson, Ferruccio Biondi Santi, who created the first actual Brunello with the 1888 vintage, establishing an entirely new category in Italian wine. The family name unites the Biondi and Santi lineages, and for four generations, the house has been the ultimate reference for Brunello.
This specific 1977 vintage was bottled by Franco Biondi Santi, often referred to as the 'father of Brunello', who continued the family's uncompromising classic style until his passing in 2013. The production method at the estate traditionally involves long aging in large barrels. The wine is made entirely from a local clone of Sangiovese, Italy's undisputed main grape, which is widely planted across Tuscany, Umbria, Emilia Romagna, and California. In Tuscany, a region with winemaking roots dating back to the Etruscans, Sangiovese forms the basis for classic wines and thrives in the rolling hills that provide the wines with their characteristic structure.
Brunello di Montalcino is produced around the town of Montalcino, south of Siena, and stands as one of Tuscany's most prestigious red wine areas. The appellation requires the use of 100% Sangiovese, known locally as Brunello, resulting in powerful, classic Denominazione di Origine Controllata wines that command significant international demand. The 1977 vintage in this area is characterized as unripe with a weak structure. Today, while the French group EPI has been the main shareholder of Biondi-Santi since 2017, the Il Greppo estate remains the heart of a house whose history is inseparable from the birth and status of Brunello di Montalcino.
The history of the wine

Tuscany
Tuscany is one of Italy's most iconic wine regions, with roots reaching back to the Etruscans. Sangiovese is the undisputed principal grape and forms the basis for classics such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. From the 1970s the prestigious Super Tuscans also emerged along the coast. The rolling hills produce structured red wines with cherry, herbs and firm tannins.
