Il Greppo Brunello di Montalcino Biondi-Santi 1977
The 1977 Il Greppo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a red wine crafted by the historic Biondi-Santi estate. Situated south of Montalcino in the iconic region of Tuscany, the Il Greppo estate is widely recognized as the birthplace of Brunello di Montalcino. In the mid-1800s, Clemente Santi laid the foundation by producing a pure red wine exclusively from the Sangiovese grape. His grandson, Ferruccio Biondi Santi, subsequently created the first official Brunello with the 1888 vintage, establishing an entirely new category in Italian winemaking. The family name unites the Biondi and Santi lineages, and the estate has remained a fundamental reference point for the area across four generations.
Tuscany is one of Italy's most prominent wine regions, with viticultural roots tracing back to the Etruscans. Within this region, the Brunello di Montalcino area, located south of Siena, is dedicated entirely to the Sangiovese grape, which is locally referred to as Brunello. Sangiovese is Italy's principal grape variety, frequently cultivated in regions such as Tuscany, Umbria, Emilia Romagna, and California. The 1977 vintage in this area is characterized as unripe with a weak structure.
This specific 1977 release is a Riserva, a designation Biondi-Santi reserves exclusively for their best vintages. Under the guidance of Franco Biondi Santi, often referred to as the father of Brunello, the estate maintained a strictly classic production method involving long maturation in large wooden casks. Bottled by Franco Biondi Santi at the Azienda Agricola Greppo in Montalcino, this wine holds a Denominazione di Origine Controllata classification and contains 12.5% alcohol by volume. As a mark of authenticity, the original glass bottle features the embossed initials B.S.

Tuscany
Tuscany is one of Italy's most iconic wine regions, with roots reaching back to the Etruscans. Sangiovese is the undisputed principal grape and forms the basis for classics such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. From the 1970s the prestigious Super Tuscans also emerged along the coast. The rolling hills produce structured red wines with cherry, herbs and firm tannins.
