Carema Produttori di Carema 1966

The 1966 Carema from Produttori di Carema originates from the dramatic landscapes of Alto Piemonte in northwestern Italy. Founded in 1960 by local winegrowers, the Cantina dei Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema is situated in a small municipality near the border of Valle d'Aosta. Piedmont, which literally translates to "at the foot of the mountain," is surrounded by the Alps and is globally recognized for its profound focus on terroir. The region is characterized by steep hills that are often enveloped in thick autumn morning fog, a natural feature that protects the grapes and ensures a long, steady ripening process.Carema is one of Italy's smallest Denominazione d'Origine Controllata (DOC) appellations, encompassing only about 18 hectares of active production. The area is renowned for its heroic mountain viticulture, where vineyards are planted at altitudes between 300 and 600 meters on steep terraces with moraine soils. A defining visual and functional element of this alpine terroir is the pergola caremese, or topie. In this traditional vine-training system, the vines are elevated on granite and stone pillars, allowing the canopy to spread horizontally like a green roof. This method was specifically developed to maximize sunlight capture in the cool alpine climate. This red wine is crafted exclusively from Nebbiolo, a prestigious Italian grape variety known locally as Picotener or Picotendro. While Nebbiolo is widely celebrated in Piedmont's famous Barolo and Barbaresco areas, the high-altitude environment of Carema yields a distinctly different structural expression of the grape. The production of this 1966 vintage was strictly overseen by the Consorzio Produttori, ensuring rigorous technical control from the harvest through the vinification process. Following fermentation, the wine underwent natural aging in oak barrels before being bottled by GI-PI S.p.A.The wines of Carema carry a rich historical legacy. As early as the 1500s, the historian Bacci documented the wine in his work De Vinis Italiae, noting its presence at the tables of the Dukes of Savoy. Over the centuries, it has also been served to the Kings of France and Queen Margherita of Savoy. Due to the challenging terrain and strict quality controls, the annual production is highly limited. For the 1966 vintage, exactly 30,000 bottles were released to the market.

About the region

Piedmont (which literally means "at the foot of the mountain") is located in northwestern Italy, surrounded by the Alps. It is considered one of the world's absolute most prestigious wine regions. The area is known for small, passionate, family-run wineries and a huge focus on terroir (how the soil and microclimate affect the wine).

Classic characteristics of Piedmont:
The royal wines: This is where the world-famous, complex and expensive red wines Barolo and Barbaresco come from (both made from 100% Nebbiolo).

Everyday heroes: In addition to Nebbiolo, the region is famous for the grapes Barbera (juicy, acidic and incredibly popular) and Dolcetto (dark, soft and fruity).

The white and sweet: Piedmont also makes the crisp white wine Gavi and the famous, lightly sparkling dessert bubbles Moscato d'Asti.

The landscape: Dramatic, steep hills – especially in the Langhe sub-area. The hills are often shrouded in thick morning mist in autumn, which protects the grapes and allows for a long, perfect ripening.

Gastronomy: An absolute mecca for food lovers. The area is world famous for the exclusive white truffles from Alba, hazelnuts and rich, simmered dishes that scream with a glass of local red wine.

Super service and very helpful. Lost one of the bottles during transport and reported it to Bottles With History. It was fixed immediately and a new bottle was sent immediately. (Actually a better wine in my opinion) It is very difficult to guarantee that older bottles are drinkable, like the Barolo from 69 I tried. Anders came to the rescue again and of course sent a new bottle of the same caliber. Thank you very much for the good service, can definitely recommend shopping here in safe hands.
