Villa Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva 1990
The Villa Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva 1990 is a red wine originating from Tuscany, one of Italy's most iconic wine regions with historical roots tracing back to the Etruscans. Specifically, it comes from Chianti Classico, the historic core area situated between Florence and Siena, which holds its own Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) classification recognized by the traditional black rooster symbol. The 1990 vintage in this region is described as full-bodied and elegant, achieving a score of 93 points. This 750ml release has an alcohol content of 12.5% vol.
This Riserva is based on Sangiovese, the undisputed principal grape of Italy and the foundation for classic Tuscan appellations. In Chianti Classico, Sangiovese must constitute at least 80 percent of the wine. While the grape is most prominently cultivated in Tuscany, it is also frequently grown in other regions such as Umbria, Emilia-Romagna, and California.
The wine is produced by Marchesi Antinori, one of the oldest family-owned businesses in the world. The Antinori family has been making wine continuously since 1385, when Giovanni di Piero Antinori became a member of the Florentine Winemakers' Guild. Today, after 26 generations, the company is led by three sisters—Albiera, who serves as president, alongside Allegra and Alessia. Throughout its six centuries of history, the family has maintained strict control of the estate.
In modern times, Marchesi Antinori has been a defining force in the transformation of Italian wine, notably pioneering the Super Tuscan category in the 1970s. The family's extensive Italian portfolio encompasses nine estates across the peninsula, including Tenuta Tignanello in Chianti Classico, Pian delle Vigne in Brunello di Montalcino, and Prunotto in Piedmont, alongside international projects in California, Chile, and Hungary. The label for this specific bottle features artwork credited to the engraver E. Polloni.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Tuscany
Tuscany is one of Italy's most iconic wine regions, with roots reaching back to the Etruscans. Sangiovese is the undisputed principal grape and forms the basis for classics such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. From the 1970s the prestigious Super Tuscans also emerged along the coast. The rolling hills produce structured red wines with cherry, herbs and firm tannins.
