Chianti Melini 1981
This 1981 Chianti from Melini is a Denominazione di Origine Controllata red wine from Tuscany, Italy. The 1981 vintage in this area is described as elegant and classic. Tuscany stands as one of Italy's most iconic wine regions, with viticultural roots dating back to the Etruscans, where the rolling hills provide the foundation for historic winemaking.
The wine is based on Sangiovese, the undisputed main grape of Italy and the cornerstone of Tuscan viticulture. While Sangiovese is also cultivated in regions such as Umbria, Emilia-Romagna, and California, it is in Tuscany where it forms the basis for classic appellations like Chianti.
Antica Casa Vinicola Cav. A. Laborel Melini was founded in 1705 by Adamo Melini in Poggibonsi, situated between Florence and Siena in the area that would later become the Chianti Classico appellation. This places the house among Italy's oldest wineries in continuous operation and marks it as a central voice in the historical development of Chianti. Today, the estate is owned by Gruppo Italiano Vini, Italy's largest wine corporation, maintaining its deep historical grounding built over three centuries of continuous production.
One of Melini's most notable contributions to Italian wine culture occurred in 1860. That year, the house designed the characteristic round Chianti bottle known as the 'fiasco', featuring a straw basket around its base. This practical design secured the bottles during transport at a time when the railway network was just beginning to open distant markets to Italian wine, eventually becoming one of the world's most recognizable visual symbols of Italian viticulture. This specific 1981 release is presented in a large-format 1500ml bottle.

From the 1970s the prestigious Super Tuscans also emerged along the coast. The rolling hills produce structured red wines with cherry, herbs and firm tannins.
