Merlot Santa Christina 1998
The 1998 Santa Christina Merlot is a Chilean red wine produced in the Colchagua Valley. It is made from Merlot, a classic blue grape variety frequently cultivated in prominent global wine areas such as Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Northern Italy.
The Colchagua Valley, holding an official DO status, is situated in central Chile, south of Santiago. As part of the larger Rapel Valley within the Central Valley region, the area stretches from the Andes Mountains in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west.
The region features a dry and warm Mediterranean climate. The vineyards benefit from warm days and cool nights, a balance maintained by the Humboldt Current, resulting in significant diurnal temperature shifts. Soil compositions across the valley vary, featuring alluvial gravel and sand on the valley floor, alongside limestone and clay in the higher altitude zones.
While Colchagua Valley is widely recognized for its signature Carmenère, the terroir also supports the cultivation of other varieties, including Merlot. After production in Chile, this 12.5% ABV vintage was imported and bottled by Vingaarden A/S.
The history of the wine

Colchagua Valley
Colchagua Valley lies in central Chile about 130 kilometres south of Santiago and is part of the larger Rapel Valley within the Central Valley region. The area holds official DO status and is one of Chile's most acclaimed wine regions, stretching from the Andes in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west.
The climate is Mediterranean with warm days, cool nights moderated by the Humboldt Current, and large diurnal temperature swings, while the soils range from alluvial gravel and sand on the valley floor to limestone and clay in the higher zones. Carmenère is the region's signature grape and yields full-bodied, powerful wines, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Malbec and Merlot. The style includes ripe blackberry, plum, black cherry, cocoa, pepper, spices, tobacco and firm but rounded tannins. The area contains prestigious subzones such as Apalta and is known as home to some of South America's most structured and age-worthy red wines.
