Conca de Barberà Castillo de Montblanc 1993

The 1993 Castillo de Montblanc is a Denominación de Origen red wine from the Conca de Barberà appellation in northeastern Spain. Produced by Bodegas Concavins under the guidance of Hugh Ryman and his team, the wine originates from the modern Concavins Bodega.Conca de Barberà is situated within the broader Tarragona region, a historic wine-producing province in the southern part of Catalonia with a coastline along the Mediterranean Sea. While Tarragona generally experiences a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters, the specific vineyards for this wine are located high up in the mountains. This elevation provides a relatively cool microclimate. The soils in the inland mountainous areas of the province are known for containing granite and slate, contrasting with the limestone and alluvial deposits found closer to the coast. The winemaking tradition in Tarragona dates back to Roman times when the city of Tarraco was a significant center for the wine trade, and today the region focuses heavily on producing dry red, white, and rosé wines. The wine is made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the world's most recognized blue grape varieties used for structured red wines. Although it is most frequently associated with regions such as Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Tuscany, the variety has successfully established itself in the modern vineyards of Tarragona. During the production process, a portion of the wine was fermented and subsequently aged in barrels.

About the region

Tarragona is a historic wine region and province located in the southern part of Catalonia in northeastern Spain, with a coastline facing the Mediterranean Sea. Geographically, the area ranges widely from sunny coastal plains to rugged, mountainous landscapes inland. The province serves as an overall geographical origin for several of Spain's most recognized wine areas and contains independent appellations such as Conca de Barberà, Priorat, Montsant, Terra Alta, parts of Penedès, as well as its own specific appellation, DO Tarragona.

The climate in Tarragona is predominantly Mediterranean with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Moving further inland and up in altitude, the climate becomes more continental with greater temperature fluctuations between night and day. The soil is highly varied and depends on the specific subregion; near the coast and in the river valleys, limestone and alluvial deposits dominate, while the mountainous inland areas are known for granite and slate-containing soils.

The wine tradition in Tarragona stretches back to Roman times, when the city of Tarraco was an important center for wine trade. Historically, the region was especially famous for its powerful, sweet, and oxidized wines. In modern times, wine production has undergone a significant development, and today there is a high degree of focus on the production of dry red, white, and rosé wines. The production is based on both local grape varieties such as Garnacha, Cariñena, and Macabeo, as well as international varieties that have gained a foothold in the region's vineyards.

Super service and very helpful. Lost one of the bottles during transport and reported it to Bottles With History. It was fixed immediately and a new bottle was sent immediately. (Actually a better wine in my opinion) It is very difficult to guarantee that older bottles are drinkable, like the Barolo from 69 I tried. Anders came to the rescue again and of course sent a new bottle of the same caliber. Thank you very much for the good service, can definitely recommend shopping here in safe hands.
