Marlbrook Constantia Klein Constantia 1996
The 1996 Marlbrook is an Estate Wine produced by Klein Constantia in South Africa. Presented in a 1500ml format with an alcohol volume of 13.5%, this red wine is grown, made, and bottled entirely on the estate. It is crafted from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world's most recognized blue grapes, typically cultivated in regions such as Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Tuscany. Merlot is another classic blue grape, frequently grown in the same regions as well as in Northern Italy.
The estate is located in Constantia, South Africa's oldest wine region, situated on the Cape Peninsula just south of Cape Town. The area has a viticultural history dating back to 1685, when the first vines were planted. The Wine of Origin appellation stretches primarily across the east- and south-facing slopes of the Constantiaberg mountain range, which forms part of the Table Mountain massif.
Constantia features a maritime and relatively cool climate, heavily influenced by its close proximity to both the Atlantic Ocean and False Bay. Constant sea breezes help moderate the temperatures in the vineyards, extending the ripening period of the grapes. The varied soils are largely dominated by weathered granite, sandstone, and gravel, ensuring excellent drainage for the vines. While historically world-renowned for its classic dessert wines in the 18th and 19th centuries, the appellation is today highly recognized for its general production of cool-climate wines, including red blends based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
