L'Escarpe Côtes du Rhône Grands Vins Sélection 2007
L'Escarpe Côtes du Rhône is a 2007 red wine bottled by Grands Vins Sélection. Holding the Appellation Côtes du Rhône Contrôlée classification, it represents the renowned Rhône Valley in southeastern France, a region where viticulture dates back to Roman times. The wine is presented in a 750 ml bottle with an alcohol content of 13.5%.
The Côtes du Rhône is a vast regional appellation that spans the entire valley, encompassing 171 communes across six departments from Vienne in the north to Avignon in the south. Recognized with AOC status in 1937, it stands as France's second-largest AOC. The terroir is highly diverse, featuring soils that range from northern granite to southern limestone, clay, and pebble gravel. The Rhône Valley itself is geographically divided. The northern section is characterized by steep slopes where Syrah is cultivated in areas like Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, while the southern part is known for a warmer climate where Grenache-based blends are prominent, particularly in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
This specific vintage is crafted from a blend dominated by 75% Grenache, a variety widely cultivated in the Rhône, Southern France, and California, originally known as Garnacha. The composition is supported by 10% Syrah, a blue grape also known as Shiraz that is prominent in the Rhône as well as in Australia and Washington. Additionally, the wine includes 10% Carignan and 5% Cinsault, both of which are Mediterranean varieties frequently grown across Southern France and California.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Côtes du Rhône
The Rhône Valley in south-eastern France has grown wine since Roman times. The region falls into two parts: the northern section with steep slopes, where Syrah produces deep wines in Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, and the warmer south, where Grenache-based blends culminate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The wines are spicy and powerful with dark berries, pepper and garrigue herbs.
