Givry 1er Cru S.I.C.A. Les Vignerons Reunion a Buxy 1994
This 1994 Premier Cru white wine from the Givry appellation is produced by S.I.C.A. Les Vignerons Reunis a Buxy and was bottled at the property. The 1994 vintage in this area was characterized as an uneven and difficult year. Despite the challenging conditions, this specific wine was recognized with a Gold Medal at the Paris National Challenge in 1996.
Located in the central part of the Côte Chalonnaise, southwest of Chalon-sur-Saône, Givry was historically known for producing King Henry IV's favorite wines. The area is part of the renowned Burgundy region, a landscape shaped by medieval monks who meticulously mapped its countless terroirs into a fine-meshed system of climats. Givry encompasses 38 Premier Cru climats, where vineyards are planted on slopes between 240 and 280 meters in altitude, benefiting from eastern to southern exposure. The vines are cultivated in brown soils composed of Oxfordian limestone and clay-limestone.
While Givry is primarily a reliable source of structured Pinot Noir, it also produces a smaller portion of white wines made exclusively from Chardonnay. As one of the world's most famous green grapes, Chardonnay is deeply rooted in Burgundy, though it is also widely planted in regions like Champagne, California, and Oregon. In Burgundy, the limestone soils stretching from Chablis in the north to the Mâconnais in the south provide the foundation for these terroir-driven wines.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Burgundy
Burgundy in eastern France was shaped by medieval monks who mapped the area's countless terroirs. The region grows almost exclusively Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and has turned terroir into an art form with its finely meshed system of climats. From Chablis in the north to the Côte d'Or and Mâconnais in the south, the limestone soil yields some of the world's most sought-after and elegant wines.
