Juliénas Georges Dubœuf 1991
The 1991 Juliénas from Georges Dubœuf is a French red wine originating from the Beaujolais region. Georges Dubœuf established his merchant house in Romanèche-Thorins in 1964 and subsequently became the most influential individual in modern Beaujolais history. Under his leadership, the region and its Gamay-based wines gained international prominence, transforming the annual release of Beaujolais Nouveau into a global event. The house works across the entire spectrum of the region, producing everything from generic Beaujolais to the ten Cru appellations. Following Georges Dubœuf's passing in 2020, the estate is now managed by his son, Franck Dubœuf.
Located south of Burgundy, Beaujolais is the traditional homeland of the Gamay grape, which is typically cultivated here as well as in the Loire Valley. Juliénas is one of the ten Beaujolais Crus situated in the northern part of the region, bordering the Mâconnais. Named after Julius Caesar, the area was granted Appellation Juliénas Contrôlée status in 1938. The appellation covers approximately 580 hectares of vineyards planted on slopes with mixed exposure.
The climate in Juliénas is continental, characterized by cool nights and warm days that create significant diurnal temperature shifts. The terroir features a well-draining mix of granite, schist, and clay-limestone soils. The higher-elevation parcels are defined by deep granite soils, while the lower areas consist of more alluvial deposits. The wines from this Cru are produced exclusively from Gamay, positioning Juliénas structurally between the lighter and the more robust Crus of the region.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Beaujolais
Beaujolais south of Burgundy is the homeland of the Gamay grape. The area became world-famous for the young, fruity Beaujolais Nouveau, but the real quality lies in the ten cru villages such as Morgon and Fleurie. The granite subsoil yields juicy, light red wines with fresh acidity and aromas of red berries, flowers and spice. A classic and incredibly food-friendly French red wine region.
