Sélection d'Automne Jurançon Larroudé 2002
The 2002 Sélection d'Automne is a white wine produced by S.A.R.L. Larroudé, under the proprietorship of Christiane and Julien Estoueigt. Bottled directly at the domaine, this cuvée holds the Appellation Jurançon Contrôlée classification and represents the winemaking traditions of southwestern France.
Jurançon is a historic AOC located in the Béarn area, situated on hilly slopes south and west of the city of Pau at the foothills of the Pyrenees. The climate is heavily influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, bringing ample rainfall in the spring. However, the area benefits from long, warm, and dry autumns driven by the Föhn wind descending from the mountains. This specific weather pattern allows for passerillage, a traditional method where the grapes are left to dry and shrivel directly on the vine rather than relying on noble rot. The local vineyards are planted on soils composed of rolled pebbles known as poudingues, along with clay, limestone, and sandstone on the steeper terraces. Historically, the appellation holds a classic status in France and is famously linked to the baptism of King Henry IV.
The broader Sud-Ouest region stretches between Bordeaux, Dordogne, Toulouse, and the Pyrenees. It is characterized by a multitude of smaller wine-growing areas with significant variations in climate, soil, and grape varieties, ranging from cool mountain vineyards to warmer valleys along the Garonne, Lot, Tarn, and Dordogne rivers. The region is highly regarded for its dedication to local grape varieties and its production of characterful white wines.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Sud-Ouest
Sud-Ouest lies in south-western France between Bordeaux, the Dordogne, Toulouse and the Pyrenees. The area comprises many smaller wine zones with great variation in climate, soil and grape varieties, from cool mountain-edge vineyards to warm valleys along the Garonne, Lot, Tarn and Dordogne rivers. Malbec, Tannat, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Fer Servadou are important black grapes, while Colombard, Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng, Mauzac and Len de l'El are used for white wine. The red wines range from fruity and spicy to dark, firm and tannic with notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, plum, pepper, herbs, liquorice and leather. The white wines can be fresh, aromatic or sweet with citrus, exotic fruit, honey and flowers. The area is known for local grapes, rustic reds, characterful whites and appellations such as Cahors, Madiran, Gaillac, Jurançon, Bergerac, Fronton and Irouléguy.
