Madiran Château de la Motte 1988
The 1988 Château de la Motte is an estate-bottled red wine from the Madiran appellation in Southwest France. Produced under the ownership of Michel Abat, this wine carries the Appellation Madiran Contrôlée classification and was bottled directly at the château.
Madiran is an AOC situated on the border between Gascony and Béarn, nestled in the rolling hills north of the Pyrenees across the Gers, Hautes-Pyrénées, and Pyrénées-Atlantiques departments. It is part of the broader Sud-Ouest region, an area stretching between Bordeaux, Dordogne, Toulouse, and the Pyrenees. The Sud-Ouest is characterized by a great variation in climate and soil, ranging from cool mountain vineyards to warm river valleys along the Garonne, Lot, Tarn, and Dordogne. In Madiran specifically, the climate is heavily influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, featuring warm, dry autumns driven by the local foehn wind. The vineyards are planted on well-exposed slopes where the soils alternate between clay-limestone, pebbles, and iron-rich subsoils.
This wine is based on Tannat, a powerful grape variety known for its deep color and clear structure, which is deeply tied to Madiran and the wider Southwest France region. In the Madiran appellation, red wines are traditionally crafted with a dominant proportion of Tannat, often supplemented by Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Fer Servadou. The grape is renowned for producing heavily structured wines, a characteristic that famously led local winemaker Patrick Ducournau to develop the micro-oxygenation technique in the 1990s to manage the grape's natural intensity.

Sud-Ouest
Sud-Ouest lies in south-western France between Bordeaux, the Dordogne, Toulouse and the Pyrenees. The area comprises many smaller wine zones with great variation in climate, soil and grape varieties, from cool mountain-edge vineyards to warm valleys along the Garonne, Lot, Tarn and Dordogne rivers. Malbec, Tannat, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Fer Servadou are important black grapes, while Colombard, Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng, Mauzac and Len de l'El are used for white wine. The red wines range from fruity and spicy to dark, firm and tannic with notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, plum, pepper, herbs, liquorice and leather. The white wines can be fresh, aromatic or sweet with citrus, exotic fruit, honey and flowers. The area is known for local grapes, rustic reds, characterful whites and appellations such as Cahors, Madiran, Gaillac, Jurançon, Bergerac, Fronton and Irouléguy.

Storage
Store the bottle horizontally at 12–14°C and avoid direct sunlight, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations.
Opening
Allow the bottle to stand upright for 24–48 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Use a professional corkscrew and open carefully.
Enjoyment
Serve at 17–18°C and be patient – there is a great difference in how and how quickly wines open up when they are aerated.
