Mouton Cadet Médoc Réserve 1994
The Mouton Cadet Médoc Réserve 1994 is a red wine produced by Baron Philippe de Rothschild in the renowned Bordeaux region of France. The company was established in 1933 when Philippe de Rothschild initiated a modernization process that culminated in Château Mouton Rothschild being elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1973. This remains the only alteration ever made to the historic 1855 classification. The family's anchor properties are concentrated in Pauillac, where Mouton Rothschild, Château d'Armailhac, and Château Clerc Milon form a cohesive estate on the Left Bank. The Rothschild family has also been instrumental in expanding French wine expertise globally, establishing Opus One in Napa Valley with Robert Mondavi in 1979, and Almaviva in Chile with Concha y Toro in 1997.
Bordeaux, located along the Atlantic coast, has been a prominent wine-exporting region since the Middle Ages. This specific wine originates from Médoc, situated on the left bank of the Gironde estuary north of Bordeaux. The area is characterized by soils composed of gravel, sand, and clay, which provide essential drainage and heat retention. The 1994 vintage from this region received a score of 82 points and is described as tight and promising.
Produced in limited quantities, this special cuvée holds the Appellation Médoc Contrôlée classification. It is a unique assemblage crafted by the family firm's own oenologists, utilizing a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the world's most recognized blue grapes, frequently cultivated in Bordeaux, California, Washington, and Tuscany. Merlot and Cabernet Franc are similarly classic blue grapes, widely grown across Bordeaux, the Loire Valley, Northern Italy, and California. As part of the production method, the wine is partially aged in oak barrels before being bottled at 12% alcohol.
