Sur La Velle Monthelie 1er Cru 1997
Produced by Château de Monthelie - Eric de Suremain, this red wine comes from the Sur La Velle vineyard and holds the Appellation Monthelie 1er Cru Contrôlée classification. The wine was bottled directly at the estate, carrying the traditional "Mise du Château" designation.
The wine originates from Burgundy in eastern France, a region shaped by medieval monks who meticulously mapped its countless terroirs and established a fine-meshed system of climats. Within the central part of the Côte de Beaune lies Monthélie, a small appellation situated on the slopes between Volnay to the north and Meursault to the south. The area features a continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. Its vineyards are planted on southeast and south-facing calcareous slopes mixed with clay and stone, ensuring excellent drainage and ripening. Monthélie is recognized as an underrated source of Volnay-style Burgundy wines and contains several classified premier cru parcels. The 1997 vintage in this region achieved a score of 86 points and is described as charming, but quickly developed.
This wine is made from Pinot Noir, an elegant blue grape variety. While Pinot Noir is cultivated in various prominent wine regions around the world, including Champagne, Germany, Oregon, and California, it is the primary grape grown in the calcareous soils of Burgundy, where it forms the foundation of the area's red wine production.
