Monthly Joseph Drouhin 1997
The Monthelie Joseph Drouhin 1997 originates from Burgundy, a region in eastern France shaped by medieval monks who meticulously mapped its countless terroirs. Monthélie is an Appellation Contrôlée located in the central part of the Côte de Beaune, situated on the slopes between Volnay to the north and Meursault to the south. Although it is a small and relatively unknown appellation, it is recognized as an underrated source of Volnay-style wines. The vineyards lie on southeast and south-facing limestone slopes mixed with clay and stones, providing excellent drainage under a continental climate of cold winters and warm summers. The 1997 vintage from this terroir received a score of 86 points and is characterized as charming, but quickly developed.
The appellation primarily focuses on red wine produced from Pinot Noir, alongside a smaller production of Chardonnay. Burgundy has elevated the concept of terroir to an art form through its intricate system of climats, utilizing the limestone soils from Chablis in the north to the Mâconnais in the south to cultivate these two signature grape varieties.
Joseph Drouhin, founded in 1880 in Beaune, is one of Burgundy's most renowned wine houses. Now in its fourth generation of family ownership, the estate operates as both a comprehensive négociant and a large-scale domaine. The house manages over 80 hectares of vineyards across the entire Burgundy region and has been a quiet but consistent pioneer of biodynamic and organic viticulture for decades. Expanding their expertise, the family also established Domaine Drouhin Oregon in the Willamette Valley in 1987, creating one of the most serious French-American wine projects. This specific wine was bottled by Joseph Drouhin in the historical cellars of the Kings of France and the Dukes of Burgundy.
