Morgon Georges Dubœuf 2001
The 2001 Morgon from Georges Dubœuf is a French red wine originating from the Beaujolais region, located just south of Burgundy. Beaujolais is widely recognized as the homeland of the Gamay grape, which is cultivated in the area's granite subsoil. Morgon itself is one of the ten designated cru appellations within Beaujolais, and the area is home to the famous Côte du Py hill.
Georges Dubœuf established his merchant house in Romanèche-Thorins in 1964 and subsequently became one of the most influential figures in modern Beaujolais history. Born in Pouilly-Fuissé to a family with generations of winegrowing heritage, Dubœuf played a pivotal role in bringing international recognition to the region and its Gamay-based wines. Under his leadership, the annual release of Beaujolais Nouveau became a global event. Following his passing in 2020, the estate is now managed by his son, Franck Dubœuf.
This Appellation Morgon Contrôlée wine is crafted entirely from Gamay, a classic French grape variety predominantly found in Beaujolais and the Loire Valley. The Georges Dubœuf estate works across the entire spectrum of the region, producing everything from generic Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages to the ten Cru appellations, including Moulin-à-Vent, Fleurie, Brouilly, and Morgon. The family also maintains historical ties to the Mâconnais area north of Beaujolais, incorporating its Chardonnay-based wines into their broader portfolio.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Beaujolais
Beaujolais south of Burgundy is the homeland of the Gamay grape. The area became world-famous for the young, fruity Beaujolais Nouveau, but the real quality lies in the ten cru villages such as Morgon and Fleurie. The granite subsoil yields juicy, light red wines with fresh acidity and aromas of red berries, flowers and spice. A classic and incredibly food-friendly French red wine region.
