Premières Côtes de Bordeaux Château de Haux 1996
Château de Haux holds a unique position in the Bordeaux landscape. Located in Haux on the right bank of the Garonne river, south of Bordeaux city, the estate has been owned by the Danish Jørgensen family since 1989. This rare constellation makes it one of the very few Danish-owned classic Bordeaux estates, offering a special historical connection spanning over three decades. The 1996 Premières Côtes de Bordeaux Château de Haux was bottled directly at the estate for its co-owners.
The wine originates from the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux, an appellation established in 1937 that stretches as a narrow, 60-kilometer belt along the right bank of the Garonne, directly across from the famous Graves and Sauternes areas. The maritime and temperate climate, stabilized by the river, along with a varied terroir of clay, limestone, gravel, and marl on well-drained slopes, provides favorable growing conditions. The 1996 vintage in this region achieved a score of 94 points and is described as classic and structured. While the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux name is today reserved exclusively for sweet white wines following a 2009 reclassification, older vintages from before this change, such as this 1996 release, are red wines.
Bordeaux is globally renowned for its historic wine production and elegant blending traditions. On the right bank, where Château de Haux is situated, the vineyards are traditionally the domain of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The estate's 50 hectares are dedicated to both red and white production, with the red wines typically crafted as a classic right-bank blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc.
