Château de Marsan Premières Côtes de Bordeaux Gonfrier Frères 2005
Château de Marsan is a red wine produced by S.C.E.A. Gonfrier Frères under the Appellation Premières Côtes de Bordeaux Contrôlée. The estate's history dates back to 1630 when the château was built by Pierre de Marsan following his marriage to a wealthy heiress from Bordeaux. Today, the domain serves as the main property of the Gonfrier Estates, recognized as the third-largest family-owned vineyard in the Bordeaux region. All production is bottled directly at the estate.
Located in the renowned Bordeaux region of southwestern France, the estate benefits from a long-standing viticultural tradition that has seen the area export wines since the Middle Ages. The 2005 vintage comes from a year that achieved a score of 98 points and is described as one of the greatest—complex and balanced. The Premières Côtes de Bordeaux appellation forms a narrow, 60-kilometer belt along the right bank of the Garonne river, stretching from Bassens to Saint-Maixant. The vineyards are primarily situated on slopes directly facing the famous Graves and Sauternes areas on the opposite bank.
The proximity to the Garonne river provides a maritime and temperate climate, which has a stabilizing effect on the temperatures in the vineyards. The terroir is varied, with soils predominantly consisting of clay, limestone, gravel, and marl. These elevated and well-drained slopes offer favorable growing conditions for the vines. Although the appellation was officially established in 1937 for both red and white wines, a 2009 restructuring reserved the Premières Côtes de Bordeaux name exclusively for sweet white wines. However, older vintages bearing this label, such as the 2005, are red wines.
The viticulture at Château de Marsan is guided by the principles of Sustainable Agriculture, known in France as Agriculture Raisonnée. This approach focuses on producing wine while maintaining the estate's economic viability without causing irreversible damage to the health of the ecosystem. These practices are strictly defined and controlled by the French government through the National Commission for Sustainable Agriculture and Farming Qualification.
