Rioja Alavesa Reserva Fernando Remírez de Ganuza 1998
Bodegas Fernando Remírez de Ganuza, S.A. presents this 1998 Reserva from the Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja. The wine originates from Rioja Alavesa, one of the three official zones in the DOCa Rioja, situated in the Basque part of the region north of the Ebro river. This area lies by the Sierra de Cantabria, characterized by its calcareous soils, high altitude, and cool nights, making it an important zone for both modern terroir wines and classic Rioja. Rioja itself is Spain's most famous wine region, with a modern winemaking history shaped by French vintners in the 19th century. The 1998 vintage in this region achieved a score of 88 points and is described as round and complex.
The wine is crafted from a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano. Tempranillo is Spain's primary grape variety, frequently cultivated in regions like Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and California. Graciano is another traditional Spanish grape, typically grown in Rioja, Navarra, and California. The grapes for this wine are sourced from vineyards with an average age of 60 years, located in the municipalities of Elciego, Leza, Samaniego, and Laguardia.
The production process involves a meticulous manual harvest, with the grapes collected in 12-kilogram boxes. Following the harvest, a manual selection of both clusters and individual berries takes place on double sorting tables. During this process, the shoulders of the grape clusters are separated from the tips, and exclusively the shoulders are used for this Reserva wine. The wine is produced and bottled on the property, undergoing an aging period of 24 months in oak barrels, a defining characteristic of the classic Reserva classification in the region.

Rioja
Rioja in northern Spain is the country's most famous wine region with a modern wine history shaped by French winemakers in the 19th century.
