Alghero Sella & Mosca 1972
The 1972 Alghero Sella & Mosca is a rosé wine produced from the Canonau grape, also known as Cannonau or Grenache, which is recognized as one of the most ancient and noble varieties of Sardinia. The grapes were cultivated on the Sella & Mosca estates, and the wine was subsequently aged and bottled by the producer in their own cellars located in the plains of Alghero. The estate was founded in 1899 when two Piedmontese men, engineer Erminio Sella—nephew of the renowned statesman Quintino Sella—and lawyer Edgardo Mosca, traveled to Sardinia to establish a wine project.
Situated on the northwestern coast of the island, Sella & Mosca grew to become one of Europe's largest single wine estates. The property covers over 600 hectares, with 541 hectares dedicated to vineyards. This immense scale gives the estate a unique position in Sardinian viticulture. Over the years, the estate has produced several iconic wines, drawing on both Piedmontese influence and local varieties. In modern times, the ownership has transitioned from the Campari Group to the Terra Moretti Group, which has further expanded the portfolio with vineyards in Gallura and Sulcis.
Sardinia distinguishes itself significantly from the Italian mainland, characterized by a rugged geography of granite and limestone that stretches from windswept coasts to the wild, mountainous interior known as Barbagia. The Alghero area, located in the province of Sassari, features a Mediterranean climate with dry, warm summers and mild winters. The vineyards are moderated by the characteristic Mistral wind blowing in from the sea, which leaves salt deposits on the vines. The local soils are highly varied, consisting of dolomitic limestone, quaternary plain sediments, and volcanic rocks.
Alghero is recognized as Sardinia's most international wine region, strongly influenced by a Catalan heritage dating back to the 14th century. The area is particularly noted for its fresh, Provence-style rosés, structured reds, and elegant white wines. It cultivates a diverse range of grapes, including the local specialty Torbato, alongside Vermentino, Cagnulari, and Cannonau.
