Montalcino Quercecchio di Maria Grazia Salvioni 1986
The 1986 Rosso di Montalcino from Quercecchio di Maria Grazia Salvioni is an Italian red wine originating from the iconic region of Tuscany. Bottled directly at the estate, this wine holds the Denominazione di Origine Controllata classification. Tuscany is celebrated for its rolling hills and deep viticultural roots that trace back to the Etruscans.
Within southern Tuscany lies Montalcino, a historic hill town situated about 40 kilometers south of Siena. The zone is naturally bounded by the Ombrone, Asso, and Orcia rivers. Montalcino features a Mediterranean climate that is generally warmer and drier than the northern Tuscan wine regions, and it benefits from the protection of Mount Amiata to the south, which shields the area from severe weather. The 1986 vintage in this area achieved a score of 84 points and is described as fresh and firm.
The vineyards across the Montalcino municipality are situated at varying altitudes, ranging from 120 to over 600 meters above sea level, creating a multitude of microclimates. The soil composition depends heavily on elevation and location; the northern part is characterized by a limestone-rich marl known locally as galestro, while the lower and more southern areas contain higher amounts of clay and sandstone.
This wine is produced exclusively from Sangiovese, the undisputed main grape of Italy. While Sangiovese is cultivated in areas such as Umbria, Emilia-Romagna, and California, it is the foundational grape for Tuscany's most classic wines. In Montalcino, the grape is locally referred to as Sangiovese Grosso or Brunello. While the area's highest classification is Brunello di Montalcino DOCG, the Rosso di Montalcino DOC is also made from pure Sangiovese, following specific production requirements within the same geographical boundaries.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Tuscany
Tuscany is one of Italy's most iconic wine regions, with roots reaching back to the Etruscans. Sangiovese is the undisputed principal grape and forms the basis for classics such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. From the 1970s the prestigious Super Tuscans also emerged along the coast. The rolling hills produce structured red wines with cherry, herbs and firm tannins.
