Frank Phélan Saint Estèphe Château Phélan Ségur 1989
Château Phélan Ségur was founded in 1805 by Bernard Phelan, an Irish merchant who settled in Bordeaux. Located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation, the estate spans 114 hectares, with 70 hectares dedicated to vineyards. The property is widely regarded as one of the finest non-1855 classified estates in Saint-Estèphe and has been recognized as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel in both the 2003 and 2020 classifications. Frank Phélan, named in honor of Bernard's son who lived from 1820 to 1883, has been produced as the estate's second wine since 1986.
Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost of the famous Médoc commune appellations in Bordeaux, situated just north of Pauillac. The soils here feature a higher proportion of clay and limestone compared to neighboring areas. Bordeaux itself is renowned globally, with a winemaking history that dates back to the Middle Ages. The left bank of the Gironde estuary, where Saint-Estèphe is located, is characterized by its gravelly soils. The 1989 vintage was produced during a year that yielded full-bodied and concentrated results across the region, earning a score of 96 points on the 100-point scale.
This red wine holds the Appellation Saint-Estèphe Contrôlée status and was bottled directly at the property. Over the decades, Château Phélan Ségur has seen significant investments, notably during the Gardinier family's ownership from 1985 to 2017, which further elevated the estate's standing. In 2017, the property was acquired by Belgian businessman Philippe Van de Vyvere for 90 million euros, marking a record price for a non-1855 classified Bordeaux estate. Today, the château operates under the direction of Véronique Dausse, with Michel Rolland serving as a consultant.

Storage
Store the bottle horizontally at 12–14°C and avoid direct sunlight, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations.
Opening
Allow the bottle to stand upright for 24–48 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Use a professional corkscrew and open carefully.
Enjoyment
Serve at 17–18°C and be patient – there is a great difference in how and how quickly wines open up when they are aerated.
