Frank Phélan Saint Estèphe Château Phélan Ségur 1988
This 1988 Frank Phélan is a red wine from Château Phélan Ségur, carrying the Appellation St-Estèphe Contrôlée designation. It originates from Bordeaux, France, a historic region by the Atlantic Ocean that has been exporting wine since the Middle Ages. On the left bank of the Gironde, where Cabernet Sauvignon traditionally dominates on gravelly soils, lies Saint-Estèphe. As the northernmost of the renowned Médoc commune appellations, situated just north of Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe is characterized by soils with a higher concentration of clay and limestone than its neighboring areas. This specific terroir provides the foundation for wines with extra firmness, depth, and tannin structure. The 1988 vintage in this area achieved a score of 91 points and is described as structured and powerful.
Château Phélan Ségur was founded in 1805 by Bernard Phelan, an Irish merchant who settled in Bordeaux. The estate's second wine, Frank Phélan, was introduced in 1986 and features a portrait caption honoring Frank Phelan (1820-1883). The wine is bottled directly at the property. The château encompasses a 114-hectare estate, with 70 hectares dedicated to vineyards. Widely regarded as one of the absolute best non-1855 classified properties in Saint-Estèphe, the estate achieved the Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel classification in both 2003 and 2020. The Gardinier family owned the château from 1985 to 2017, significantly elevating its standing before selling it to Belgian businessman Philippe Van de Vyvere for 90 million euros, a record price for a non-1855 classified Bordeaux estate. Today, the property is directed by Véronique Dausse, with Michel Rolland serving as a consultant.

Storage
Store the bottle horizontally at 12–14°C and avoid direct sunlight, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations.
Opening
Allow the bottle to stand upright for 24–48 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Use a professional corkscrew and open carefully.
Enjoyment
Serve at 17–18°C and be patient – there is a great difference in how and how quickly wines open up when they are aerated.
