Saint-Pourçain A. Gallas et Fils 1983
The 1983 Saint-Pourçain is an estate-bottled wine produced by A. Gallas et Fils, who operate as winegrowers and harvesters. At the time of this vintage, the wine was classified as an Appellation d'Origine Vin Délimité de Qualité Supérieure (VDQS), a status the area held from 1951 until it was elevated to a full AOC in 2009.
Saint-Pourçain is one of the smallest appellations in the Centre-France area, situated in the Allier department of the Auvergne region. Associated with the broader Loire Valley, which follows France's longest river and is famous for its Renaissance castles, Saint-Pourçain lies along the Sioule river, south of Vichy. It is one of France's most historic wine regions, with viticultural roots stretching back to Roman times, and it later served as the court wine for French kings during the Middle Ages.
The local climate is continental, characterized by hot summers and cold winters. This is moderated by the surrounding forests and the Sioule river, which contribute to cool nights and significant diurnal temperature shifts. The terroir features a marked diversity in soils, ranging from granite on the eastern slopes to limestone and flint on the western side. The appellation produces white, red, and rosé wines, utilizing grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Gamay, and Pinot Noir, and holds the unique distinction of being the only appellation in France to cultivate the rare, native Tressallier grape.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Loire
The Loire Valley follows France's longest river and is known for its Renaissance châteaux. The long region holds enormous variety: crisp Muscadet by the coast, Sauvignon Blanc from Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, versatile Chenin Blanc in Vouvray, and Cabernet Franc reds from Chinon. The cool climate produces fresh, lively wines, both dry, sweet and sparkling.
