Saint-Véran Georges Dubœuf 1994
This is a 1994 Saint-Véran from the renowned producer Georges Dubœuf. Established in Romanèche-Thorins in 1964, Georges Dubœuf became the most influential figure in modern Beaujolais history, bringing global recognition to the region. While primarily famous for his Gamay-based wines and the Beaujolais Nouveau phenomenon, the family also has historical ties to the Mâconnais district just north of Beaujolais, where this white wine originates. The 1994 vintage in this region is recorded as an uneven and difficult year.
The wine comes from Burgundy in eastern France, a region shaped by medieval monks who meticulously mapped its countless terroirs. Specifically, it is produced in the Saint-Véran appellation, located in the southern part of the Mâconnais district. Granted AOC status in 1971, Saint-Véran covers approximately 740 hectares across seven communes, situated on the border of Beaujolais and just south of the famous Pouilly-Fuissé area. The climate here is a transition between continental and a slight Mediterranean influence, with warm summers and mild winters moderated by the Saône river and the slopes around the distinctive Solutré and Vergisson rocks.
Saint-Véran wines are crafted exclusively from Chardonnay, one of the world's most recognized green grapes, which is widely cultivated in regions like Burgundy, Champagne, California, and Oregon. The vines in this area grow in soils consisting mainly of Jurassic limestone, marl, and clay. Notably, this specific release is classified as "Vieilles Vignes," indicating it was produced from old vines, and was originally brought to the market through the importer Løgismose A/S.
