Les Serpentières Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru 1997
Produced in the historic region of Burgundy in eastern France, the Les Serpentières Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru 1997 is a Grand Vin that reflects a deep winemaking heritage. Burgundy's landscape was shaped by medieval monks who meticulously mapped the area's countless terroirs, creating a fine-meshed system of climats. The 1997 vintage for this region received a score of 86 points and is characterized as charming, but quickly developed.
The wine originates from Savigny-lès-Beaune, a communal AOC in the Côte de Beaune located just north of the town of Beaune. Granted AOC status in 1937, the appellation covers approximately 350 hectares of vineyards. The area features a continental climate with warm summers and cold winters, alongside a distinct topography formed by a side valley between Beaune and Aloxe-Corton. The soils consist of chalk and clay over a limestone bedrock. Savigny-lès-Beaune is home to 22 Premier Crus, including the Les Serpentières vineyard, and the plantings are overwhelmingly dominated by Pinot Noir, which makes up about 90 percent of the production.
This wine was produced and bottled at the property by Maurice Ecard et Fils. Domaine Maurice Ecard is a family winery with roots dating back to the early 1900s. During the post-war era, Maurice Ecard became a respected voice in the Côte de Beaune, and his work with the local Premier Crus significantly increased the appellation's visibility outside of Burgundy. Following his retirement in 2004, the estate was divided between his two sons. As a result, bottles released under the Domaine Maurice Ecard name are typically from vintages prior to 2004, serving today as a historical testament to the family's original estate.
