Rotaliano Cavit 1966
The 1966 Rotaliano from Càvit is a red wine originating from the mountainous Trentino region in northern Italy. Càvit, which stands for Cantina Viticoltori del Trentino, was established in 1950 and has grown into one of Italy's most significant wine organizations. Operating as an umbrella for 11 member cooperatives, it represents around 4,500 winegrowers cultivating approximately 5,250 hectares. This structure allows Càvit to showcase the full breadth of Trentino's viticulture, representing the region's cooperative tradition in its most organized form. This 1966 vintage was bottled at 12% alcohol in a 680ml format and features the seal of the Consorzio Cantine Sociali del Trentino, alongside the motto 'Dalla vite alla mensa,' translating to 'From the vine to the table.'
Trentino is situated within the larger Trentino-Alto Adige area, characterized by a dramatic landscape dominated by the Dolomites and the Adige River valley. The vineyards are frequently planted on steep slopes and terraces that stretch from the valley floor up to high altitudes. The climate here is a unique intersection of alpine and Mediterranean influences. The towering peaks of the Dolomites shield the vines from cold northern winds, while the proximity to Lake Garda to the south moderates the temperatures. This creates a continental climate with significant temperature variations between day and night, providing highly favorable conditions for viticulture in the rugged terrain.
This wine is made from Teroldego, an ancient grape variety that is almost exclusively cultivated in Italy. Its history in the Trentino-Alto Adige region dates back to the Middle Ages, with historical documents tracing its presence to the 13th and 15th centuries. The name is believed to originate either from an old village called Teroldege or from the dialect term Tiroldego, meaning 'Tyrol's gold.' Genetically, Teroldego is a parent to the local Lagrein grape and a full sibling to the French Dureza, an ancestor of Syrah. The variety thrives particularly well on the Campo Rotaliano, a gravelly, alluvial plain formed by the Adige and Noce rivers. The vines are traditionally trained using the local pergola system, which protects the grapes from direct sunlight and ensures proper ventilation in the alpine climate.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Trentino
Trentino is a recognized wine region located in the northern Italian region of Trentino-Alto Adige. The landscape is distinctly mountainous and is dominated by the Dolomites as well as the Adige Valley. The vineyards are often laid out on steep slopes and terraces that stretch from the valley floor up to high altitudes, which creates a varied and dramatic terroir.
The climate in Trentino is a unique blend of alpine and Mediterranean-like influences. The high mountain peaks of the Dolomites protect the region from cold winds from the north, while the proximity to Lake Garda in the south has a moderating effect on the temperature. This results in a continental climate with significant temperature differences between day and night, which provides favorable conditions for viticulture in the mountainous terrain.
The region has a long wine history that dates back to pre-Roman times. Today, Trentino is known for a strong cooperative tradition that operates side by side with independent wineries. The area is recognized for its production of sparkling wines made according to the traditional method, as well as a wide range of still wines. The vineyards are planted with both international grape varieties such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as well as local varieties such as Teroldego, Marzemino and Nosiola.
