The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
McLaren Vale
McLaren Vale lies about 40 kilometres south of Adelaide in South Australia on the Fleurieu Peninsula between the Mount Lofty Ranges to the east and Gulf St Vincent to the west. The area covers around 7,500 hectares of planted vineyard and has a history dating back to 1838, making it one of Australia's oldest wine regions.
The climate is Mediterranean with warm dry summers, mild winters and cool afternoon breezes from the sea, and the soils are remarkably varied with over 55 different soil types, including red clay, limestone, sand and slate. Shiraz dominates the plantings, complemented by Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cabernet Sauvignon and Mediterranean varieties such as Vermentino, Fiano and Nero d'Avola, which thrive in the warm climate. The style of Shiraz is typically full-bodied and generous with ripe blackberry, plum, dark chocolate, liquorice, spices and soft tannins, while Grenache is juicy and spicy with strawberry, raspberry and herbs. The area is known as home to some of the world's oldest Grenache vines and a focus on sustainable viticulture.
