Trentino Cavite 1986
This 1986 vintage from Cavit is a red wine made from the Northern Italian Marzemino grape. The bottle was released with a special label commemorating the 60th National Gathering of the National Alpini Association, which took place in Trento on May 16 and 17, 1987.
Cavit, which stands for Cantina Viticoltori del Trentino, is one of Italy's largest wine organizations. Founded in 1950, it unites 11 member cooperatives, representing around 4,500 winegrowers across approximately 5,250 hectares. This extensive scale allows the organization to cover the full breadth of the area's viticulture, representing cooperative winemaking in its most organized form under the motto "A Vite Ad Vitam".
The wine originates from Trentino, the southern part of the alpine Trentino-Alto Adige region in northern Italy. The area covers a long valley around the Adige river, nestled between the Dolomites and Lake Garda. The vineyards, which can reach elevations of up to 900 meters, are planted in soils of limestone, porphyry, and stone. The local climate is both alpine and continental, characterized by cool mountain air currents and significant temperature differences between day and night.
Marzemino is a dark-skinned grape variety that is deeply rooted in the viticultural traditions of Trentino and Lombardy. The wine is classified as a Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) under the Trentino appellation, which was established in 1971, and it bears the mark of the Consorzio Marzemino Trentino.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Trentino Alto Adige
Trentino Alto Adige is an alpine-influenced wine region in northern Italy, where the vineyards lie among mountains, valleys and cool altitudes. The region effectively comprises two distinct wine identities: Trentino to the south and Alto Adige, or Südtirol, to the north. Trentino is especially known for Trento DOC, sparkling wine made by the classic method, as well as Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Teroldego and Marzemino. Alto Adige is known for elegant, fresh and aromatic wines from Pinot Grigio, Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Bianco, Schiava, Lagrein and Pinot Nero. The cool climate, the great differences in altitude and the limestone, porphyry and stony soils give wines with high freshness, pure fruit and clear precision. The region is known for alpine wines with balance, elegance and a strong local identity.
