Montepulciano Terrilogio 2003
The 2003 Terrilogio is a red wine originating from the iconic wine region of Tuscany, Italy. Specifically, it is a Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a prestigious Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG). Montepulciano is a historic area located in southeastern Tuscany, situated between the Val di Chiana and Val d'Orcia valleys. Centered around a medieval hilltop town, the area boasts a long winemaking history that dates back to the Etruscans. In 1980, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano became the first wine in Italy to achieve the highest quality classification of DOCG.
The vineyards in Montepulciano are typically planted on slopes at altitudes between 250 and 600 meters above sea level, providing the vines with varied sun exposure and microclimates. The climate is predominantly Mediterranean, characterized by warm summers and cool nights. This temperature variation, combined with cooling breezes from the surrounding hills and a mild influence from the nearby Lake Trasimeno, ensures an even ripening of the grapes. The 2003 vintage was characterized by warm and ripe conditions, earning a score of 85 points. The local soil is highly varied, consisting of a complex mixture of clay, sand, limestone, and tuff, where the clay contributes to the structure of the vines while the sand and limestone ensure proper drainage.
This wine is based on Sangiovese, the undisputed main grape of Italy and the foundation of many classic Tuscan wines. In Montepulciano, this grape is locally known as Prugnolo Gentile. While Sangiovese is primarily cultivated in Tuscany, it is also frequently grown in other regions such as Umbria, Emilia Romagna, and California. The region of Montepulciano in Tuscany should not be confused with the grape variety of the same name, which is primarily grown in Abruzzo. The wine is bottled at 13.5% alcohol by volume.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Tuscany
Tuscany is one of Italy's most iconic wine regions, with roots reaching back to the Etruscans. Sangiovese is the undisputed principal grape and forms the basis for classics such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. From the 1970s the prestigious Super Tuscans also emerged along the coast. The rolling hills produce structured red wines with cherry, herbs and firm tannins.
