Montepulciano Terrilogio 2003
The 2003 Terrilogio is a red wine produced under the prestigious Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) classification. Bottled at 13.5% alcohol, it represents one of Italy's most iconic wine regions, Tuscany, where winemaking traditions trace all the way back to the Etruscans.
The historical Montepulciano area is located in southeastern Tuscany, centered around a medieval hilltop town between the Val di Chiana and Val d'Orcia valleys. Vineyards are planted on slopes at altitudes between 250 and 600 meters above sea level, offering various sun exposures and microclimates. The Mediterranean climate features warm summers and cool nights, with cooling breezes and a mild influence from nearby Lake Trasimeno. The 2003 vintage in this area is described as warm and ripe, achieving a score of 85 points. The vines are rooted in a highly varied soil consisting of a complex blend of clay, sand, limestone, and tuff, where the clay contributes to the structure of the vines while sand and limestone ensure good drainage.
Sangiovese is the undisputed main grape of Tuscany, and in Montepulciano, it is locally known as Prugnolo Gentile. This grape forms the primary foundation for Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which in 1980 became the first wine in Italy to obtain the highest quality classification, DOCG. The geographical region of Montepulciano in Tuscany is distinct from the grape variety of the same name, which is primarily cultivated in Abruzzo.
The history of the wine
Below, you can delve into the history of this wine — its producer, grape, area, and region.
Tuscany
Tuscany is one of Italy's most iconic wine regions, with roots reaching back to the Etruscans. Sangiovese is the undisputed principal grape and forms the basis for classics such as Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. From the 1970s the prestigious Super Tuscans also emerged along the coast. The rolling hills produce structured red wines with cherry, herbs and firm tannins.
